Collaboration with Nigerian universities offers German institutions access to one of Africa’s most dynamic academic and innovation ecosystems. Nigeria, with over 200 million inhabitants and a rapidly growing young population, has a diverse higher education sector that is seeing increasing investment in research, digital transformation, and entrepreneurship.

There are particularly promising opportunities for higher education cooperation with Nigeria in the fields of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Media Studies, Creative Industries, Renewable Energy, Food Security, Environmental Studies, Agriculture, Medicine and Health Sciences, and STEM education.

In this context, Nigerian and German universities already share a growing history of collaboration, supported by the DAAD, DFG, and other partners.
Building on this foundation, they are increasingly seeking structured partnerships in areas of shared strategic interest – such as mobility, joint research, and technological innovation.

This matchmaking event, organized by KIWi – the DAAD Centre for International Academic Cooperation – and the DAAD Regional Office in Accra, aims to promote new partnerships.
It provides a structured platform for selected Nigerian and German higher education institutions to connect, exchange ideas, and explore shared interests. The two-hour session will include short presentations by Nigerian universities, a case study on the experiences of an existing partnership, and contributions from key funding institutions.
Engage directly with representatives of universities and funding bodies to explore tailored collaboration opportunities and gain insights into application processes.

Questions that may be discussed during the event to facilitate an initial exchange and getting to know one another include:

  • What type of exchange and collaboration are partners seeking?
  • In which areas can German and Nigerian higher education institutions best cooperate to achieve common goals?
  • How can partnerships between German and Nigerian universities help foster the exchange of knowledge and technology?
