Visa for studying in Germany

International prospective students and students from non-EU countries require a visa to enter Germany and study here. Whether a visa is required depends on your nationality.

Entry and visa application

If you are not from an EU country, an EEA country or Switzerland, you will usually need to apply for a visa at the German mission (embassy or consulate general) in your home country before entering Germany. Please note:

  • Do not apply for a tourist visa (type C), but for a national visa (type D) for a longer stay.
  • Family members travelling with you may also require a visa.
  • Find out in good time about the processing time and the documents required.

Types of visas

1. Visa for applying to study or preparing for studies
If you have not yet been admitted to a higher education institution but would like to attend a language course or a Studienkolleg (preparatory college), you can apply for a visa to prepare for your studies or to look for a place at a higher education institution. The latter is usually issued for a maximum of nine months.

2. Visa for study purposes
As soon as you have been admitted to a university or preparatory college, you will need a visa for study purposes.

Further information on entry and residence requirements for international incoming students is available from the International Office.
