The application and admission procedures
Degree programmes without admission restrictions
There are no limits on the number of places available for degree programmes without admission restrictions (bachelor's and master's). This means that all applicants who meet the formal requirements will be offered a place.
For Bachelor's degree programmes, the requirements are a valid university entrance qualification (either through a German school leaving certificate or an international school leaving certificate) and, if necessary, language certificates.
Admission to Master's programmes is granted, provided that the Bachelor's degree fulfils all subject-specific requirements and the formal requirements, such as language certificates, are met. The exact admission requirements can be found in the respective admission regulations.
For bachelor's programmes, you can register directly via the LUH application portal. For master's programmes without restricted admission, an application via the LUH application portal is still required.
Restricted admission degree programmes
For restricted admission degree programmes (bachelor's and master's), only a limited number of places are available per application period. This usually means that not all applications will be successful.
For Bachelor's programmes, you need a valid university entrance qualification (either through a German school leaving certificate or an international school leaving certificate) and, if necessary, language certificates. If there are more applications than places available, a selection process will be carried out according to the criteria of the admission regulations (e.g. Abitur grades, waiting semesters). Applicants with the best results in the selection process will be offered a place.
For master's programmes, you must meet the formal and content-related admission requirements in order to participate in the selection process. If there are more applications than places available, the admissions committee will decide on your admission.
After successful application, you will receive a letter of admission for the summer semester starting in February and for the winter semester starting in August. Admission must be accepted within the specified period; only then is enrolment possible. Only those who receive admission can enrol.
The selection process for Bachelor's degree programmes with restricted admission (+state examination)
Numerus clausus (NC)
The NC is only calculated for restricted-admission, undergraduate degree programmes. Degree programmes with unrestricted admission do not have an NC.
Approximately 80–90% of study places are allocated based on performance/grades.
The university calculates a procedural grade, which determines the ranking of applicants. It is composed of the Abitur grade and other subject grades that are relevant to the degree programme (see admission regulations). For applications with “dzܱڱ” or an international school leaving certificate, no procedural grade is calculated; the final grade counts.
All applications are listed according to their procedural grade:
- Best grades → top of the applicant list
- Lower grades → further down
The NC for a degree programme is the procedural grade of the applicant who received the last place on the programme. The NC cannot be predicted as it is determined each year by the selection process.
Waiting times for the last semesters
Approximately 10–20% of study places are allocated based on waiting time. Waiting semesters are the semesters (half-years) after obtaining the Abitur or Fachhochschulreife (university entrance qualification) in which the applicant did not study in Germany.
A ranking list is created for all applications:
- Longest waiting time → top of the list
A maximum of 7 waiting semesters can be taken into account. If the waiting time is the same, the average Abitur grade is the second criterion.
The necessary waiting time for a degree programme is always the result of the selection process and is therefore NOT predictable. It can only be seen as a guideline for the next semester.
Applicants from Germany and the EU are treated equally in the application process. Different grading systems are converted by our admissions team. For applicants from non-EU countries, grades will be converted by uni-assist and listed in the VPD.
The NC only applies to applicants from Germany and the EU. For applicants from non-EU countries, there is a separate allocation quota, with 5% of study places available, which are awarded exclusively on the basis of grades.
Applying multiple times to LUH?
At Ƶ, you can only apply for one restricted-admission bachelor's programme per application period. However, you can apply for several master's programmes.
Didn't get a place at the university?
If you applied for a restricted-admission undergraduate programme and didn't get a place, you can still enrol in an unrestricted-admission bachelor's programme until 30 September.
Last chance: lottery
If there are still individual places available in restricted admission degree programmes, shortly before the start of the semester, these will be allocated in a lottery procedure. All prospective students can take part in the lottery procedure, even if they have not previously submitted an application.
Unlike Bachelor's programmes, the application deadlines for Master's programmes at LUH do not depend on whether the programme is open admission or restricted admission. Please always check the individual application deadlines for your desired programme!
